“The city can only begin to stabilize the population when the District’s stock of affordable housing rises… We have a homeless system that tends to expand, but we don’t have a supply of affordable housing that has kept pace with the need.”

Director of the DC Department of Human Services

HYACINTH’S WAY

Hyacinth’s Way is a residential property with 21 one-bedroom apartments and 5 efficiency units of affordable housing. It will also provide support services for homeless, elderly mentally ill residents. Hyacinth’s Way will be located at 444 Ridge Road, South East, Washington DC. The four level Hyacinth’s Way building will be built on 3,447 square feet of land. The complex will provide residences for both males and females who meet the criteria for senior housing.

Hyacinth’s Way will be a “green building” complete with solar heating, an elevator, 24-hour security, a reception hall, on-site laundry facilities and an outdoor garden complete with benches for relaxation.  Residents will have an annual lease, access to public transportation, grocery stores and other neighborhood necessities. Apart from a property manager, staff on site will include a part-time social worker of licensed mental health professional.

Success of Hyacinth’s Place

Over the past seven years, Hyacinth’s Place has gained helpful experience providing supportive services to the homeless mentally ill.  The residents who received these services recorded no hospitalization and remained free of conflict with the law. Substance abuse issues were adequately addressed, and vocational opportunities were made available as appropriate.  Our residents have maintained their mental and physical health as well as stable housing.

For the seniors of Hyacinth’s Way, we propose the following services:

  • Coordination of care (Case-management)
  • Mental Health Counseling
  • Home Health Care as identified necessary
  • Meals on Wheels as identified necessary
  • Transportation for medical purposes

Services will be tailored to address residents’ needs, which may involve multiple service agencies working together.

Hyacinth’s Place intends to work with the available resources offered by the DC Government’s Office of the aging; the DC Department of Human Services, the DC Department of Behavioral Health and the DC Housing Authority.  Our Development Team is made up of Developer (Urban Green LLC) Architectural (Encore Sustainable Design, LLC) Geotechnical/Environmental (ECS Environmental); Law Firm (Goulston & Storrs).  Contractor: (Eichberg Construction).

Hyacinth’s Way is scheduled to come on line in 2019.
